mother/daughter activity

I've been collecting ideas for a mother daughter activity. Last year we did a dinner and game for our mother/daughter activity, this year I'm thinking spa party.

I've found some great ideas out there on the web so this is just my idea board.

supplies: nail polish, lotion, files, cotton balls, Q-tips, towels, headbands, bowls, polish remover, cucumbers, facial masks, clippers, toe separators, cutical sticks

these invites are adorable and perfect!!

I loved the idea of the mom's and girls doing the treatments on each other.
here is a cute soak and nail station. She also had a facial station with an oatmeal mask and cucumbers for the eyes.

You'll also need some soothing music and water sounds, as well as low lights in the facial station. use battery tea lights or twinkle lights

Can also decorate with louffa's

I thought this was a cute idea for the nail station

I loved these flip flops and thought they'd be fun to have for the girls and their moms

A scrub would be a great take home for each of the girls and their moms

I also thought we could have a make-up station where the girls could get tips on make-up and skin care

We could also make lip gloss

and of course there has to be food. these veggies and dip would be perfect and add some mini water bottles and we're set.
sorry I couldn't find the source for this one, if anyone knows it's origin please let me know

I also thought these might be great favors for a take home, nail polish in cupcake holders
or do swag bags with all the fun things in them

another cute favor idea

I've seen nail kits at the dollar store with toe seporaters, files and clippers so that each girl would have something to use.
could also find hand towels at the dollar store to use.

What to do with mom's with more than one daughter???? Leaders step in?

Personal Progress Activity

I found the idea for this activity on Sugardoodle. It actually turned out to be a great night and the girls got some goals planned and others signed off.
It's called a Ketchup Night, where we "ketchup" on some Personal Progress. I had the beehives over to my home and they brought their books so we could look over what they still need to do and so that I could see if there was anything we could do as an activity to help.
We had french fries and tater tots as a treat to go with our "ketchup" I also made up a mark off sheet for those two week goals to help them track their time spent on it.
We'll be having these nights a few times a year to keep us current on the girls progress.

This is the goal tracking sheet I made up you can download it here if you'd like.
here is a blank copy of the invite I made for the night. I had them printed out as photo's at Walmart which is cheaper than doing a color copy. You can add your info in the blank space.  I went to McDonalds and just asked for as many ketchup packages that I need and they gave them to me for free.

YW Christmas gifts

I had lots of ideas for gifts for the Young Women this year but of course there are always issues with budget so some of my ideas were out of the question. But this one seemed to work really well. I saw this over at How Does She and thought it would be perfect.
I bought my vinyl at Expressions Vinyl for $.99 a sheet and got all the mugs at the Dollar Tree. We put a package of hot chocolate, a dipped spoon, and a dipped marshmallow in each cup.

For another great gift idea for YW check out my friends creative blog
She's got a really cute board that she did for her YW.

Christmas Lesson

For our Christmas lesson this year each of us in the presidency took a turn to speak to the girls. We took the word JOY and each took a letter and expounded on finding Joy this season J~ finding Joy in Jesus Christ, O~ finding Joy within others, Y~ finding joy in yourself.
I took J and gathered ideas from talks by Elder Eyering & Pres. Gordon B. Hinckley. I'm pretty sure I cried through the whole thing, talking about my Savior is a very personal thing to me, I just hope the girls could feel the joy the Savior can bring into our lives. After the lesson we met in the kitchen for cocoa and cookies. (we have an ant problem in our building so we can only have food in the kitchen or gym)
I hope all can find the JOY in the season.
Merry Christmas

Caroling with a twist

Do your youth go caroling every year? Is it painful to go and watch? It usually is for me. Most don't like to sing, they try to hide in the back so that they won't be noticed, and usually unorganized and no one knows what song they're singing.

Well this year we're trying something different. My mom was YW Pres in her ward  while back and this was something they've done and had great success. Lucky for me (& you) she could tell me any tips or quirks that needed to be worked out.

The idea of this is to make them think if they reject the Savior in their lives or are their hearts fully open to him.

You will need: 4 homes willing to participate (helpful if they're fairly close together)
Some where to gather after caroling
4 plates of treats/cookies
songs to be sung & words typed out
Music~ Amy Grant-Breath of Heaven
The Nativity Video
some way to play the music and watch the video/ projector
A couple to play Mary and Joseph and a some one willing to let you borrow their fairly new baby.

Now we haven't done this yet so I'm going from notes I took while my mom told me about it. So I'll post again once we've done this to let you know how it went and any other tips I may have

1st house you carol to: They kindly listen & take the goodie. (this is so the youth aren't tipped off right away that somethings up)

2nd house you carol to: someone opens the door takes the cookies and closes the door, they don't speak at all.

3rd house you carol to: this person ins on the phone when they answer the door and they tell them they don't have time right now, I'm in a hurry. Closes the door.

4th house you carol to: This person opens the door and is more interested with whats on the TV. Eventually they go and sit back down in front of the TV. They come back to close the door and say that they can't hear while they're singing.

***Tips for the caroling part: make sure those at the door talk loud enough so that everyone can hear. Also make sure everyone is at the door before you knock to sing. Make sure that those participating at the houses are willing to take their part seriously and are willing to be rude.

After the last house everyone should be silent while you go to your end meeting place. This place should be big enough for everyone to fit and be able to watch the video. Be sure the leaders know that everyone is suppose to be quiet during this time and once they arrive at your meeting place. Have them sit down quietly. Maybe have quiet music playing in the background.

Have your Mary and Joseph come out carrying the baby (the baby should only have on a plain diaper and a plain white blanket, try to avoid binkies to help with the affect, also doesn't matter if it's a boy or a girl) Mary and Joseph should also be dressed the part.
This part should be fairly unscripted. Have them talk about the wonder of what has just happened, the star, Shepard, who their child is, how people will hate and reject him, what he will have to suffer, etc.
Then as a way to get Mary and Joseph "off stage" have Joseph say he needs to check on the animals and have Mary go out with him (just an example).

***Tips for this part: be sure Mary and Joseph talk loud enough. Be sure the baby is fed and changed right before. Don't have anything on the baby to make it look modern in any way.

After they've left immediately start the video with the music playing over it instead of the videos sound. Once the video is done have the bishop BRIEFLY talk about the reality of Christ and by our actions are we inviting him in or rejecting him.

Then after serve some nice refreshments. We'll be doing a small cocoa bar with mini doughnuts.
They key is to keep this from the youth, all they know is that they're going caroling.
I also found this on Pinterest (which came from an Etsy shop here) and thought it would be a fitting handout. I'd tie this around some "hay/straw" for them to take home.
if you have any questions about this activity please feel free to comment or email me (you can find my email on my sidebar). OR if you do this activity I'd love to know how it went.

Camp Crafts

I am not the camp director or over crafts at camp but each year we do a craft as a ward on some down time so these are general ideas for crafts you could do at camp. I found these on Pinterest (one of the most wonderful places ever, but also the worst because it eats up all my time!) and I'm sure I'll be adding to these as I see more great ideas.

This one is a stove burner cover that you can get at the dollar store. Cover it with fabric or scrapbook paper, spray paint to match, add ribbon to hang.(not necessarily in that order) You can also make magnets to match using the clear glass rocks.

My Lesson 44

* disclaimer: I only teach lessons on the first Sunday every three months, therefor I have approx. 3 months to prepare my lesson.

With that said I had so much fun putting this lesson together. I really needed this lesson myself and it helped me re-evaluate my priorities and what I'm spending my time on.

I've included my lesson with notes and additions (most of which I found on the side bar on the LDS.org site).

quotes and stories I had the girls read: Page 1, 2, 3

I made those cute owls  sacks that I put a small treat and a quote or story to be read during the lesson.

Signage used in the lesson (there are 4 different ones)
This note card is what I had the girls write their thoughts on at the end of the lesson

For the handout I made the owl paper sacks and inside put somethings to help them to remember to use their time wisely.

I found the "to do" lists at Michaels in their dollar sections and divided them in two to go into two different bags, I put  tag on a small thing of cookies that said " smart cookies use their time wisley".

I found the plastic watches at Party City for $.35 ea and tied a tag to it that said this

And of course something with the suggestions they gave from the lesson which you can download here

Like I said I really enjoyed giving and preparing for this lesson, hopefully the girls walked away a little bit better because of it.
